Mumbai: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has dominated the Maharashtra civic body elections held for 29 municipal corporations in the state. The Mahayuti alliance is leading in 23 out of the 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The saffron outfit has created history by winning the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai for the first time in its history.

Who has won the BMC election?

The Mahayuti alliance has secured a decisive lead in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik. The BJP has completely taken control of Mumbai and has emerged as the largest party in the BMC for the first time in 45 years.

The most important of all the corporations in the state is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The BJP alliance appears to be winning 118 seats out of the 227 seats in the BMC. BJP candidates are currently leading in 90 seats, and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena is leading in 28 seats. Thus, Mumbai appears to be completely painted saffron.

The BJP has hoisted the flag of victory in the BMC elections. For the first time, the BJP is in a position to elect its own mayor in Mumbai. No BJP leader has ever been able to become the mayor in the history of the BMC. After 45 years of its formation, the BJP has finally achieved the position to elect a mayor in Mumbai.

What is the current situation in the BMC?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has 227 seats. The majority mark for the mayor is 114. According to the current trends, the BJP is leading in or has won 90 seats, and Shinde's Shiv Sena is leading in or has won 28 seats. Thus, the Mahayuti alliance appears to be getting 118 seats. Celebrations have started in the BJP camp.

What is the fate of the other parties?

Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in or has won 63 seats. The Congress is leading in 12 seats, and MNS candidates are leading in 6 seats. In addition, Ajit Pawar's NCP is leading in one seat, and candidates from other parties are leading in 9 seats. Because of this, the BJP can easily elect its own mayor in Mumbai.

What is the previous record of the BJP in the BMC elections?

The Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980. Thus, after 45 years, the BJP has emerged as the largest party in the BMC elections in Mumbai for the first time. The BJP is showing its dominance in the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation). The BJP appears to be in a position to form its own government in Mumbai. The BJP has reached a position where it can elect its own mayor for the first time in Mumbai.

In the last BMC elections held in 2017, the BJP won 82 seats and the Shiv Sena won 84 seats. However, due to the coalition government in Maharashtra, the BJP supported the Shiv Sena, but this time the political tables have turned.

In the Mumbai BMC elections, the BJP contested the elections in alliance with Shinde's Shiv Sena and defeated the Thackeray brothers. The BJP appears to have won 8 more seats than in the 2017 BMC elections, while Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) seems to have won 19 fewer seats. Moreover, Uddhav is not in a position to elect his own mayor even with the support of the opposition, and the BJP's position has become clear.

Who will the BJP make its mayor in Mumbai?

Mumbai, Maharashtra, is finally going to get a mayor after four years. The last person to hold the post of Mumbai's mayor was Kishori Pednekar of the Shiv Sena, who held the position from November 22, 2019, to March 8, 2022. However, at that time, the Shiv Sena was not divided between Uddhav and Shinde. But now the Shiv Sena has split into two factions, and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena contested the BMC elections in alliance with the BJP, while Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) tried its luck with Raj Thackeray's MNS.

The BJP and Shinde's Shiv Sena appear to have secured a massive majority in Mumbai. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party, which means the party is now in a position to elect its own mayor. The BJP will elect its own mayor in Mumbai for the first time, but the question is, whom will the party entrust with the reins of the BMC?

However, the BJP has made one thing clear: its mayor will be from the Marathi community. Many senior BJP leaders have been elected as corporators in the BMC elections. BJP veteran Kirit Somaiya's son, Neil Somaiya, has been elected as a corporator for the second time. In addition, Tejasvi Ghosalkar has won the BMC election. He secured victory from the Dahisar seat.

About a month before the BMC elections, Tejasvi left the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction and joined the BJP. After his BMC victory, he is now being seen within the BJP as a potential candidate for the mayor's post. Several other senior BJP leaders have also been elected as corporators. It remains to be seen who the BJP will choose as its mayor.

How is the mayor elected in Mumbai's BMC?

The BMC mayor is considered a very powerful position, and there is significant competition for it. A total of 227 corporators are elected from different wards in the BMC, who are known as Nagar Sevaks or Corporators in Mumbai. The party with the majority holds the strongest claim to the mayor's post.

The corporators elected in the municipal corporation elections elect the mayor. The mayor's term is two and a half years, while the corporators are elected for a 5-year term. After one mayor's term ends, another mayor is elected.

Although the mayor's post is the highest in the BMC, the real power lies elsewhere. The richest municipal corporation has two wings: the political wing and the administrative wing. The political wing is headed by the mayor, while the administrative wing is headed by the Municipal Commissioner.
